PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder which realizes stable and highly precise detection of an ink remaining amount, and to provide its control method and a program. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder has a setting mechanism which can set a guide member for transferring a tray on which a record medium is loaded to the inside of the recorder. An optical sensor which moves in an up-down direction in accordance with the presence/absence of setting of the guide member detects the ink remaining amount in an ink tank of a recording head. In the case where a distance between the ink tank and the optical sensor changes in the middle of detecting the ink remaining amount, the process of detecting the ink remaining amount by the optical sensor is carried out again.
