PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-strength polylactic acid fiber having biodegradability and low shrinkability and to provide a method for production with which the fiber can stably be produced. SOLUTION: The polylactic acid fiber is composed of a polylactic acid resin and characterized in that the total fineness is 250-1,850 dtex, the single fiber fineness is 1-15 dtex, the strength is 4.0-6.0 cN/dtex and dry heat shrinkage percentage at 120°C is 0.5-2.5%.
