PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment agent greatly affecting display characteristics, that is, giving a liquid crystal alignment film which has a proper pre-tilt angle, has excellent electric characteristics, in particular, has excellent residual charge and voltage retention and hardly causes burning, and to provide a liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal alignment film. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment agent contains a polyamide acid (polyamide acid(A)) obtained by reacting tetracarboxylic dianhydrides and a diamine without long chain branching or contains the polyamide acid(A) and a polyamide acid (polyamide acid(B)) with long chain branching of a specified structure. Therein, the tetracarboxylic dianhydrides are constituted of (a) aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride of 15∼35mol% and (b) two kinds or more of aliphatic or alicyclic tetracarboxylic dianhydride of 85∼65mol%.
