PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auto-tentioner difficult to break and excellent in durability. SOLUTION: This auto-tentioner of endless transmission belt has: a plunger 20 slidably mounted on a housing 11, the tip of the plunger 20 abutting on the outside surface of an endless belt; an energizing means 21 for protrusively energizing the plunger 20 from the housing in the direction of applying a tension to the endless transmission belt; a ratchet 23 to be meshed with a rack 22 formed on the outside surface of the plunger 20, the ratchet 23 being rotatably fixed to the housing; and a spring 27 for energizing the teeth 24 of the ratchet 23 meshed with the rack 22 of the plunger 20 in the protruding and retreating direction of the plunger 20. The housing 11 has a contact surface 11d opposed to the rotating center part 23a of the rachet 23. The rachet 23 has, on the rotating center part pushing-side circumferential surface, a close contact surface 23d to abut on the wall surface of the contact wall 11d of the housing 11, and a curved part 23e allowing the rotation of the ratchet 23 conformed to the protruding of the plunger 20.
