PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new environmentally friendly black pigment without using a heavy metal. SOLUTION: The surface of a compound oxide black pigment composed of a rare earth which is at least one kind selected from lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium and samarium, an alkaline earth metal and iron is treated with a hydroxide or an oxide of one kind of element selected from silicon, aluminum, zirconium, titanium and zinc as constituent elements.
