The personnel safety device has a horizontally extending stainless steel cable (6) along which moves a runner upon which the personnel are secured by a carabine hook (5). The runner unit has at least two pieces of preformed sheet metal (2) which in their lower section have an elongated hole extending at right angles to the axis and dimensioned so that in the unlocked state they open the slide piece halves (1) wide enough for the runner unit to be pulled down or pushed up from the cable at an angle of 90 deg to the cable axis. In the locked state the two slide piece halves are opened only wide enough so that the runner unit can move over the cable and cable holder (7).
