PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine including a variable valve mechanism capable of changing the operating characteristics of an intake valve and to detect variations in the operating characteristics of each inlet valve exactly, easily and rapidly. SOLUTION: An engine ECU40 decides that the operating state of the engine 10 is an idling state, determines intake air amount in each cylinder, and calculates an average intake air amount Gaave of all cylinders. The engine ECU40 calculates intake air pulsationΔGai in each of the cylinders, and calculates an intake air pulsation rate Pi of each of the cylinders 12 using the calculated average intake air amount Gaave. The engine ECU40 calculates an average intake air pulsation rate Pave using the calculated intake air pulsation rate Pi of each of the cylinders 12, and calculates an variationΔPi in the intake air pulsation in each of the cylinders 12 using the average intake air pulsation rate Pave and the intake air pulsation rate Pi of each of the cylinders 12.
