PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for consolidating the tip of a steel pipe pile while preventing intrusion of water into the pile and settlement of the pile and enhancing the bearing force of the pile by leaving part of a hardener such as cement or dry-mixing mortar behind in the pile, and forcing the remainder of the hardener out onto the tip of the pile and the nearby ground for quick hardening without causing a drive hammer to project from the tip of the pile. SOLUTION: The method of placing a steel pipe pile is to consolidate the ground of a planned construction site by use of a hollow steel pipe pile. After the hollow steel pipe pile 1 charged at its tip with a filler 9 mixed with at least a hardener is buried to a predetermined depth, a predetermined drive hammer 15 of a hammer device 12 is inserted and dropped from the upper opening 10 of the steel pipe pile 1. A part of the filler 9 is left behind in the tip of the pile 1 while the remainder is forced out onto the tip of the steel pipe pile 1 and its nearby ground by the impact of the drive hammer and hardened.
