PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper-treating agent capable of imparting flexibility and water absorptivity to paper; and to provide a method for treating the paper by using the paper-treating agent. SOLUTION: The paper-treating agent contains an alkylene oxide adduct of a polyhydric alcohol. Preferably, the paper-treating agent contains one of a phosphoric acid ester salt of an alcohol, a diester salt of sulfosuccinic acid and an ester of a dibasic acid and a diol besides the alkylene oxide adduct of the polyhydric alcohol.
