PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the edge of washing put in a washing and spin-drying machine from being caught in a door and to automatically put enough quantity of washing in the machine so as to improve washing efficiency in automatically putting washing in the washing and spin-drying machine including an inner drum rotated around the horizontal axis. SOLUTION: In putting washing in the washing and spin-drying machine, simultaneously or in advance, washing water is supplied into a washing tub 2. That is, after the washing tub 2 is turned upward to receive the washing, immediately the supply of the washing water to the washing tub 2 is started, and simultaneously with the supply or later, the washing is put in the inner drum 4. After a designated amount of washing is put therein, the door 6 is closed and the washing tub 2 is returned to the horizontal state to enter a washing process. The washing put in the inner drum 4 is decreased in bulk on touching the washing water in the washing tub 2 to suck the water, whereby the edge of the washing is prevented from being projected over the inner drum so as to put a larger quantity of washing therein.
