The present invention aims to provide an organic EL element having excellent light-emitting efficiency, emission luminance and color purity of green light. The organic EL element contains an organic thin film layer interposed between a positive electrode and a negative electrode, this organic thin film layer comprising a 1,3,6,8-tetrasubstituted pyrene compound represented by the following formula (1) as a luminescent material: wherein R<1 >to R<4 >may be the same or different, and represent a group represented by the following formula (2): wherein R<5 >and R<6 >may be the same or different, and represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent group.
