A method for remote control boring, e.g. for horizontal bores, has a boring head (1) with a hardened tip driven through the ground by pneumatic impulses and with an attached pneumatic hose (2) connected to a pneumatic supply (3). The movement of the hose is monitored by a sensor (5) near the start of the bore and connected to a processor control (6, 7), which determines the position and boring speed. If the boring speed rises by more than 14 percent within a time frame of 5 seconds a safety programme stops the boring process. This enables the operator to ascertain if the boring bit is about to hit a void. If the boring speed drops rapidly, indicating a hard obstruction, the failsafe programme also stops the boring, enabling the operator to check and to proceed carefully.
