PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a designated point region in a general image of a surveying jot site to be surveyed automatically. SOLUTION: An automated surveying system designates a pixel (or a region) desired to be surveyed on the general image photographed by a digital still camera 20. A collinear line LN<SB>C</SB>, for specifying collinear conditions of a designated pixel, is obtained from an external standardizing element to a surveying instrument 10 of the general image. The instrument 10 is moved so that a visual line (collimating direction) LN<SB>O</SB>moves along the collinear line LN<SB>C</SB>. The instrument 10 collimates a collimation point (R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>) on the line LN<SB>C</SB>, and surveys and measures the position of an article point Q<SB>i</SB>to be measured when the position is surveyed toward the collimation point R<SB>i</SB>. Then, if the position of the point Q<SB>i</SB>is located at a point on the line LN<SB>C</SB>, it is assumed that the point Q<SB>i</SB>is an article point to the pixel designated on the general image. If the region is designated, these operations are conducted for each pixel in the region. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
