PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a serial printer performing printing in both going stroke and returning stroke by reciprocating a carrier mounting a print head in which shift of a print position between the going stroke and returning stroke can be corrected readily without requiring much labor or time. SOLUTION: A traveling time measuring means measures the traveling times of going stroke and returning stroke when a carrier reciprocates a specified region including a stop position of the going stroke (S2-S12), a time difference operating means operates the time difference thereof (S13), a start position correcting amount operating means operates the correcting amount of start position of the carrier in the returning stroke depending on the time difference (S14), and a start position displacing means displaces the start position of the carrier in the returning stroke depending on the correcting amount (S15-S19). Even if the stop position of the carrier in the going stroke is shifted before the carrier is started in the returning stroke, it can be corrected when the carrier is started in the returning stroke and thereby print position can be prevented from being shifted between the going stroke and returning stroke.
