PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a film scanner in which a focal distance switching function is given to an imaging optical system so that an imaging element may pick up the images of films having different sizes in the same size and, at the same time, the received light quantity of the image pickup element does not drop even when the focal distance of the optical system is switched. SOLUTION: This film scanner is provided with a light source, an optical illumination system which illuminates the surface of a film with a luminous flux emitted from the light source by multiplying the flux so that the flux may meet the size of the film, and the imaging optical system which makes a luminous flux transmitted through the film incident to the image pickup element by changing the luminous flux in power so that the flux may meet the using area of the imaging element.
