9-Benzylidene-naphtho-(2,3-b)-thiophen-4-ones (I) are new. Naphthothiophenones of formula (I), in the form of E- or Z-isomers or E/Z-mixtures, are new. R1 - R5 = H, 1-6C alkoxy, 1-6C alkyl, aryloxy, COOH, SO3H, SO3M, ester group, thioester group, CN, acyl, aryloxy, OCH2Ph, NO2, OH, NH2, imino, SH, halo, -OP(O)(OM)2, -NHP(O)(OM)2 or -NHP(O)(OR)2; M = cation; R = 1-8C alkyl, benzyl or aryl.
