A fan unit comprising an electrically driven rotating wheel (7) accommodated in a housing (10) with an air inlet (11) and an air outlet (12) creates a stream of air guided by specifically shaped deflectors (9) in order form a barrier (3) preventing the smoke from extending into the safe area (6) for the duration of the evacuation in particular of the inhabitants of a nursing home or hospital.
