Data communication system (1) has a number of computers (5, 15a, 25) and an administration computer (31) for upgrading or updating of software data stored in the computer storage (8, 18, 28). The administration computer determines what data transfer medium is to be used before commencing software data upgrading. The invention also relates to a corresponding computer designed to enable upgrading over a suitable data transfer medium. An Independent claim is made for a method for upgrading a computer of a data communications system over a data transfer medium from a central administration computer.
