PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error monitoring method capable of collecting various error information concerning a read channel unit, and to provide a read channel provided with an error monitoring function. SOLUTION: The error monitoring method in the read channel having a bit determination means for determining whether or not each data unit of user data restored according to an input of a predetermined analog test signal comprises; a history storage means for storing history information on signal changes of monitoring objects necessary for analyzing errors in temporary memory having a predetermined storage capacity; a decision means for deciding whether or not an extract instruction is inputted to extract necessary history information from the temporary memory, and returning the processing to the history storage means in the case of a negative decision; and an extraction means for extracting the history information temporarily stored during the time having a predetermined relation with the timing of inputting the extraction instruction and an output means for outputting the extracted history information according to an affirmative decision by the decision means.
