PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve characteristics by previously coating powder used for cemented carbide etc. with metal binder and forming uniform cemented carbide. SOLUTION: An aqueous solution containing trivalent titanium ions and a complexing agent is prepared. Powder which contains, as principal components, at least one or more kinds selected from the group consisting of the carbides and nitrides of the group IVa, Va, and VIa elements and solid solutions thereof are added to the aqueous solution and these are agitated to alkalify the pH of the aqueous solution, and then iron-group ions are added to undergo agitation. By this procedure, iron-group metal can be selectively deposited onto the surface of the powder. The amount of titanium contained in the iron-group metal hereat is minute. Particularly in the case where the powders of WC, TiC, and VC are coated with cobalt, the cemented carbide having high strength and high toughness can be obtained. The aqueous solution used here can be recycled because it can be regenerated by cathodic reduction treatment in an electrolytic cell. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
