Applying a further coating (16) to a component (10) that already has a lacquered surface (11, 12, 13, 14) involves an initial surface-activating treatment, e.g. subjecting it to a corona discharge. A free streaming electrode is used at a distance of 1 to 4 cm. The coating (16) can be a scratch-resistant, dirt-repellant, or a further colored or clear lacquer layer. The scratch-resistant coating (16) can contain organic or inorganic nano-scale particles produced by a sol-gel process. The coating (16) is about 3 to 5 mum thick.
