PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact multi-stage planetary gear type transmission having variable speed with a large deceleration ratio and capable of easily controlling gear-shifting. SOLUTION: In a planetary gear train provided with three pairs of single pinion type planetary gear mechanisms and structured so that a sun gear, a carrier, a ring gear, an input shaft and an output shaft of each planetary gear mechanism are always connected to each other in a certain condition or selectively connected through an engaging means or so that the rotation thereof is selectively stopped through the engaging means, multi-stage variable speed with excellent controllability of engaging elements and capable of obtaining an appropriate step of the change gear ratio containing variable speed with a large deceleration ratio can be realized by appropriately operating engaging means such as a set clutch means and a set brake means for engagement/release.
