Provided are a dispersion of an inorganic layered compound cleaved into thin layers, which can impart high corrosion resistance or gas barrier properties when used in coating material or gas barrier coating compositions; a gas barrier coating composition which can give film having high transparency and satisfactory gas barrier properties at a low cost when applied in a small thickness and which can give film having excellent transparency and higher gas barrier properties when applied in a large thickness; and gas barrier packaging containers made of plastics or paper and having high gas barrier properties, which containers are obtained through the application of the gas barrier coating composition. The invention relates to a dispersion of an inorganic layered compound which is produced by dispersing an inorganic layered compound (b) in a dispersion medium by the use of a peroxide (a).
