The chain (3) is held by magnetic holding forces in the direction of the centre of the chain blade (2) beyond conventional 180 degree loop angle up to the release point (5) at up to 320 degree loop angle so that during a shift on the release point an effective lengthening and shortening of the chain is possible in respect of different teeth numbers on the toothed rim. The magnetic holding fields on the chain blade can co-rotate with the chain. The co-rotating magnetic holding field has radial components and rotating components and the teeth are preferably of alternate poles.
