A printer generates a public key, by the public key cryptosystem, using a pass-phrase including at least printer location information and a random number and, at the same time, holds the random number. A print client previously obtains the public key from the printer. When sending print data to the printer, the print client encrypts the print data in advance using the obtained public key and sends the encrypted data as transmission data for printing. Upon receiving the transmission data for printing, the printer generates a private key, by the public key cryptosystem, using the pass-phrase including at least printer location information and the random number that the printer holds. The printer uses the private key to decrypt the received transmission data for printing. This system ensures the security of print data sent from a print client to a printer over a network.
