<p>Process for prepn. of 1,3,5-trailky-2,4,6-tris (3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) benzenes comprises (a) forming an ester of a 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol by reacting a 2,6-dialkylphenol (I) with formaldehyde, or a formaldehyde polymer, a secondary amine (II), and a carboxylic acid (III), and (b) connecting the ester into the 1,3,5-trialkyl-2,4,6-tris (3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzy) benzene by reacting the ester with a 1,3,5-trialkylbenzene (IV) in the presence of sulphuric acid and an inert organic solvent. The process enables the 1,3,5-trialkyl-2,4,6-tris (3,5-dialky-4-hydroxylbenzyl) benzenes to be produced in high yields, and is simpler than known processes. The 2,6-dialkylphenols, and other raw materials are readily available. The pdts. esp. 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris (3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) benzene are useful as antioxidants for fuels, lubricants, rubbers and plastics.</p> |
