1,246,653. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. CENTRA ANSTALT. 29 Nov., 1968 [11 July, 1968], No. 56716/68. Heading B5K. The material-contacting surface 5<SP>1</SP> of a jaw for welding portions or cooling previouslywelded portions of thermoplastic materials comprises a plurality of elastic metallic laminar plates 5 which are deformable so as to follow all the profile irregularities of the portions. The jaw comprises a metallic block 1 holding the plates 5 mounted parallel to each other and, preferably, made of beryllium-bronze. The plates 5 may be C-shaped, Fig. 1, or annular, Fig. 6a, each with a projecting lower end 5<SP>1</SP> or T-shape, Fig. 3 (not shown), with the upper portion resting against a silicon rubber buffer (8). If the jaw is used for welding, an electric heating resistance is located in a bore 12 and a thermocouple feeler in a bore 13. If the jaw is used for cooling, liquid is circulated through the bore 12. In use, the jaw co-operates with a similar jaw or a plane surface. A "non-stick" sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene or carbon fluoride may be placed between each of the jaws and the material when welding. The thermoplastic material to be welded may be gusseted tubing. |
