PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high purity ethynyl group-containing aromatic carboxylic acid, particularly high purity 5-(phenylethynyl)isophthalic acid which is a useful intermediate for the synthesis of high performance polymers and the like. SOLUTION: The method for preparing the ethynyl group-containing aromatic carboxylic acid comprises transesterifying dimethyl 5-(phenylethynyl)isophthalate in acetic acid by using 35% hydrochloric acid as the catalyst, and distilling the formed methyl acetate to complete the reaction.
