PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the execution of a right error correction even if residual data, which is not erased and remains on a substrate track, is reproduced at an in-point and an out-point when editing a tape, in a case where an error parity data is recorded on the track prior to the in-point and on the track following the out-point. SOLUTION: Upon writing in data on tracks, a flag is added to respective editing units at both ends of an editing section by an editing control means 116. Upon reading out the data, the existence or non-existence of the flag on the tracks is checked by an editing point flag judging means 117 to judge the track to be the editing units at both ends of the editing section, and the track at both ends of the editing section is invalidated. In this process, an error correction is executed correctly even if the residual data, which is not erased and remains on the substrate track, is reproduced at the in-point and the out-point when editing the tape, in the case where the error parity data are recorded on the track prior to the in-point and on the track following the out-point.
