PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic detection unit which enhances the stability or the like of a reproduced waveform, appropriately suppresses generation of side reading, and appropriately copes with a narrowed track. SOLUTION: A free magnetic layer 30 and a ferromagnetic layer 43 form a ferrimagnetic structure at the opposite side portions A of the detector, with a non-magnetic intermediate layer 37 interposed therebetween. A hard bias layer 35 is provided at the opposite sides of the free magnetic layer 30 and the ferromagnetic layer 43. An amorphous magnetic layer 39, comprising Co and having an amorphous phase, is contained within the ferromagnetic layer 43. This arrangement amplifies the uniaxial anisotropy of the ferromagnetic layer 43 to be fixed stably, in the width direction of the track, as well as the antiparallel state in the magnetization of the free magnetic layer 30 and the ferromagnetic layer 43. As a result, even with a narrowed track, stability or the like can be enhanced in a reproduced waveform, and generation of side reading can be reduced appropriately. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
