PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing pentaerythritol diphosphonate industrially advantageously in a high productivity. SOLUTION: The method for producing pentaerythritol diphosphonate represented by formula (4) (wherein Ar<SB>1</SB>and Ar<SB>2</SB>are aryl groups; and R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>8</SP>are hydrogen atoms, aryl groups, or the like) comprises reacting phosphorus trichloride with pentaerythritol, subsequently reacting the product with a specified aralkyl alcohol in the presence of an organic base compound to obtain a reaction mixture containing pentaerythritol diphosphite, separating and removing organic base compound components from the reaction mixture, and heating the resulting reaction mixture in the presence of a halogenated compound at 80-300°C.
