PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recording method for recording data to a multi-level optical recording medium by which the range for assigning recording marks is optimized. SOLUTION: At least one assignment is determined out of a relative light reflectance Ra of a virtual recording cell having the highest relative light reflectance on which the recording mark Ma is formed, and a relative light reflectance Rh of a virtual recording cell having the lowest relative light reflectance on which the recording mark Mh is formed, in accordance with the recording power of laser beams used for forming the recording marks. By this procedure, variance in the relative light reflectance of the virtual recording cells whereon the same recording marks are formed, is suppressed, and also the satisfied reproduction signal is obtainable since the securement of the wide dynamic range is attained.
