PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plastic optical fiber which has superior chemical durability, mechanical strength, and heat resistance by solving problem points of a glass optical fiber, and to provide a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: The plastic optical fiber is formed in core-clad structure. To protect the optical fiber against air and water by improving the heat resistance of the optical fiber, a protective layer or coating layer is formed on the external surface of the optical fiber in core-clad structure. The plastic optical fiber uses fluoridated plastic containing a rare earth component as its core material and also uses fluoridated plastic which is coupled principally by a -[CF<SB>2</SB>]<SB>n</SB>- monomer containing no rare earth component and consists principally of a polymer chain having a lower refractive index than the core material as its clad material.
