PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel material for liquid phase diffusion welding superior in hardness uniformity of a jointed part, which shows high strength and superior toughness in an as-jointed state. SOLUTION: This steel material for liquid phase diffusion welding comprises, by mass%, 0.01-0.3% C, 0.01-0.5% Si, 0.01-3.0% Mn, 0.001-0.005% B, 0.001-0.01% N, 0.01% or more but 0.5% or less Al, 0.01-0.10% Ti, and 0.03% or less P, 0.005% or less S and 0.01% or less O, which are limited elements, and the balance Fe with unavoidable impurities, and has a TLB value defined in the following expression of 0.001% or more: TLB (%)=(B%)-[(N%)/1.3-ä(Ti%)/3.4+(Al%)/4.1}×(Al%)×52]. The steel material for liquid phase diffusion welding has a difference of hardness within±100 or less by Vickers hardness between a jointed part of a joint and positions on both sides, which are 5 mm away from the jointed part, when the materials are welded by liquid phase diffusion welding with the use of an insert metal.
