The method involves dispensing the agent into the exhaust gas system (9) before a catalyser (8). Engine specific values for nitrogen oxide concentration, exhaust gas quantity and temperature and reduction agent concentration are used as control parameters for reduction agent dispensing, from which a dispensing rate is derived which is corrected depending on the engine load state. A corresponding matched reduction agent quantity is added to the exhaust gas flow.
