<p>Preparation of hydroxyalkyl starch (HAS) derivatives comprising reacting hydroxyalkyl starch or its derivative at its optionally oxidized reducing end with primary or secondary amino compound of crosslinking agent. The derivative is obtained by reacting hydroxyalkyl starch at its optionally oxidized reducing end with a compound having functional group capable of reacting with the optionally oxidized reducing end. Preparation of hydroxyalkyl starch (HAS) derivatives of formula (I) comprises reacting hydroxyalkyl starch of formula (I) or its derivative at its optionally oxidized reducing end with a compound (L) comprising at least one functional group Z 1 capable of reacting with (I), or at least one functional group Z 2 capable of reacting with functional group W comprised in (I), and at least one functional group X capable of reacting with a functional group Y of a further compound (M). The derivative is obtained by reacting (I) at its optionally oxidized reducing end with compound (D) comprising at least one functional group Z 1 capable of reacting with (I) and at least one functional group W.
