In a machine for forming a continuous tobacco filler stream as described in Specification 929,338, by-pass means are provided to admit air into the filler stream at or near the level where the excess tobacco will be removed. The opposed side walls 9 of a channel traversed by an air-pervious conveyer band 1 have concave recesses 14 below the level at which the trimming device operates, and air by-pass slots 15 extending in the direction of movement of the band 1 to the downstream end of the walls 9. In a modification the slots are horizontal.
