A bearing incorporating a safety device in the event of seizure comprises a shaft supported in a bush 2 which is mounted in a housing 3 by a ball-bearing assembly. To prevent rotation between the bush and housing as the shaft rotates, lugs 10 and 16 attached to the housing 3 are located in a recess 22 and ramp 23 respectively in the bush. The lug 10 is attached to a spring-loaded piston 12 in a chamber 13. A spring-loaded finger 19 in the housing 3 bears against lug 16. When the shaft is rotating, lug 10 is withdrawn from the recess 22 in the bush by fluid pressure acting on the piston from between the bush and the shaft via openings 15 in the chamber 13. The annular groove 11 in the lug 10 is then in line with finger 19. Seizure between the bush and shaft effects displacement of the lug 16 by the ramp 23 in the bush due to rotation thereof, which then aligns opening 17 in lug 16 with the groove 11 and finger 19. The finger is then urged forward to hold both lugs in the withdrawn position. Further rotation of the bush and shaft in the ball-bearing causes severance of a wire 18 to terminate the power supply. |
