Extended nip calender arrangement and process for satinizing a paper or cardboard web

A papermaking machine has a brad-nip Calender formed by a rotating drum mantle (10) and counter-face (7). A wind-off assembly (3) is esp. located prior to the broad nip (12) in the direction of web motion. The wind-off assembly is located in the immediate vicinity of a paper magazine (5). The wide nip Calender (6) can be operated at different speeds and has a humidifier (16) and further off-line processing units (26, 27). Also claimed is a paper or carton glazing process in which, prior to the process, the humidity-stabilized web (2) is withdrawn from the paper roll (4) and allowed to cool to a pre-determined temperature. A number of rolls are brought together and are processed as a single batch under identical conditions but at a different machine operating speed to that under production conditions. The glazing process is undertaken in conjunction with a further process.
