The fault recognition method has each control signal (A-TOP,A-BOT) delivered from a control processor to the driver circuit for each semiconductor switch used for providing an enable signal (EN-TOP,EN-BOT) for each other semiconductor switch, each semiconductor switch only controlled by the driver circuit when both the control signal and the corresponding enable signal are each present. A counter associated with each switch counts in the forwards direction in response to the beginning of the control signal for the switch and counts in the reverse direction in response to the beginning of each other control signal, a fault signal supplied when the count value differs from 0 and1.
