A cell has a cathode 12, a depolarizer 14 thereon and an anode 16 parallel to and separated from the depolarizer, the separator 18 being non-porous insulating material wholly interposed between the depolarizer and the anode. A battery according to Fig. 3 comprises a depolarizer 14 surrounded by a wire or rod cathode 30, and a positive pole connection 20. An anode 16, is insulated from the depolarizer 14 by a non-porous insulator 18 and is connected to a negative pole connection 22, itself insulated from the depolarizer 14 by a sleeve 31. Electrolyte fills the space 36 formed by the battery case 32. The structure may be modified to comprise successive laminar components, i.e. a cathode depolarizer block, insulator plate and anode. Anode materials may be Zn, Cd, Mg, Pb, Fe; cathode materials:-Ag, Pt, Au, Cu, Pb; depolarizer materials:-AgCl, PbO 2 , AgBr, Ag 2 O, CuO; and electrolyte comprise:-lithium halides, fluorboric acid, perchloric acid, NaOH, NH 3 OH, certain non-aqueous liquids &c. |
