The spindle head for machine tool has a drive motor (10) shaft axially slidable in the motor spindle housing (12). The relative sliding movement is limited by a stop ring (16) in the housing, so that the motor is retained by a defined axial force in its working position. The stop ring can be a spacer or spring which deforms at a preset axial load.
