[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for fixing on to metal cans opening keys positioned between a pair of diametrically opposite cover seams comprises a base supporting a vertical journalled shaft, two platforms mounted in spaced relationship at the upper end of the shaft and a plurality of punches extending downwardly from the upper platform, the axes of which are equi-spaced about the shaft axis. The device comprises an upper platform 11 on the underside of which are mounted a plurality, e.g. 10, equi-spaced vertically disposed punch assemblies each of which comprises fixed inner and outer cylindrical members 12<SP>1</SP>, 22 between which is slidably mounted a spring-biased cylindrical member 23, and a corresponding number of coaxial non-rotatable piston assemblies 16 on the upper ends of which are mounted can positioning members 17, 18, positioned on a lower platform 13. The coupled platforms are mounted on a belt driven main shaft 6 and idler rollers 20 attached to the lower ends of the pistons 16 engage a cam ring 21 to impart reciprocating motion to the piston assembly during rotation of the platforms. Keys 28 are stacked in a pair of feed magazines 50<SP>1</SP>, tiltable for loading, located on a manually operated slide 42 which positions each loaded magazine in turn over a reservoir 38 which is located over the platform 11. A plurality of equi-spaced fingers 32 e.g. ten, are positioned alternately between ten key slots 33 formed in the platform 11 and protrude less than a key thickness above the top surface thereof to deflect a key into the preceding slot synchronously with the upward movement of the can. In operation, with the platforms rotating, sealed and sterilized cans with their axes horizontal are gravity fed along a guide device 26 and then twisted so that their axes are vertical at 27, into engagement with the plate 17, which is in its lowest position and raised during further rotational movement by the piston 16 into engagement with the cylinder 23 at which point a key 28 deflected from the reservoir 38 by the finger 32 falls into the cylinder 23 and is located in an oblique position as shown in Fig. 2. Continued raising of the can against the cylinder 23 causes the key to abut the fixed cylinder 22 which springs the key into a horizontal position between the crimped rims of the can lid. Continued rotation lowers the can which is subsequently deflected from the plate on to a further conveyer 31. In a modification the key stacking unit comprises a pair of inclined rods 58 along which the keys are gravity fed to a key guiding slot 54 in a block 53 positioned above the platform 11. The keys are initially supplied in batches arranged along a metal strip to facilitate loading of the feed units. The reservoir accommodates sufficient keys to cover the change-over time from one stack to the other. |
