PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for deciding an optimum recording power in a disc drive are provided to minimize a variation in the recording power due to a hardware deviation of the disc drive. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus and a method for determining an optimum recording power in a disc drive includes a pick-up(102) and a controller(103). The pick-up records data in a predetermined region of a disc(101) and reproduces recorded data. The controller controls the disc drive to record data in the predetermined region of the disc while varying a predetermined reference recording power. The controller detects a plurality of signals reproduced from the predetermined region of the disc through the pick-up on the basis of at least one reference value, and detects a plurality of recording powers corresponding to the detected signals. The controller decides an optimum recording power for the disc on the basis of the detected plurality of recording powers.
