A buckle for a belt or strap has a sprung retaining finger which locates into the holes in the belt and enables the belt to be tightened with a single handed action e.g. to tighten a cinch strap. The conventional metal coil spring is replaced by a simple elastomer ring (28) which is looped over the buckle near to the pivot axis of the finger where it is looped around on crossbar of the buckle, and with the other end of the ring looped over a second crossbar (12) and over the finger (24). No other fittings are required. The free end of the finger is pulled against a roller (18) over which the belt is pulled.
