摘要 By generating alternately a rich and lean exhaust gas, oxygen is stored in an accumulator catalyst in the lean phase and in the rich phase this is consumed by reaction with exhaust gas components to heat the nitrogen oxides (NOx) accumulator. Process for the operation of an internal combustion engine applied to a direct fuel injection system and with an exhaust gas system with at least one catalyst. To heat the catalyst, the engine is operated alternately in lean mode (lambda greater than 1) to fill an oxygen (O2) accumulator catalyst , and in rich mode (lambda less than 1) to heat the catalyst using the heat of reaction of burnt fuel with O2 (lambda = ratio of air /fuel). The O2 storage capacity of each catalyst is firstly determined by a transition in lambda. With the storage capacity of O2 thus determined, a lower calorific value relative to O2 is determined. Taking account of a coefficient lambda of the exhaust gases and their mass flow rate, the supply of energy and thus temperature of catalyst is obtained and regulation and control of the heating of the catalyst is effected by regulation of the rich/lean phases. Independent claims are also included for the regulating and command unit and internal combustion engine functioning with the system.
