PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel mechanism capable changing the linear stepping force of a pedal by a driver into the most suitable torque characteristics according to a travel load condition in the operation status of a bicycle. SOLUTION: The chain device is provided with a crank shaft, a pair of crank arms and a crank chain gear integrally rotating coaxially with the crank shaft, a rear chain gear rotating integrally and coaxially with a rear wheel hub, and a drive chain extending between the crank chain gear and the rear chain gear. An eccentric intermediate idle gear operated at the half cycle of the rotation cycle of the crank shaft is intervened in the extending side passage of the drive chain and engaged with the chain, thereby changing the length of the chain passage cyclically and giving variation in an angular speed to the moving crank shaft.
