PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved optical scanner and image forming apparatus capable of forming a high-definition image in the optical scanner which has a light source, a deflecting means for deflecting light beams from the light source and performs horizontal scanning and an image forming means for forming the image of scanned light beams on an image carrier and records the image in the image carrier. SOLUTION: This image forming device is provided with a luminous flux separating means (212) having a reflection area (107) for reflecting light beams from light sources (401 and 402) to a deflecting means (206) and transmission areas (108) where the light beams scanned by the deflecting means transmit, and both upper and lower transmission areas (108) of the reflection area (107) are enabled to transmit the light beams. Layout of optical paths of upper and lower stages can be arranged symmetrically on a scanning plane that passes through the optical axis of fθlenses (214 and 213), and respective image forming characteristics are matched to equalize beam spots to form a high quality image.
