摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for inspecting foreign substances in a liquid crystal panel, which can locate a depth position of the foreign substance additionally to detecting the foreign substance in the liquid crystal panel. SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with a light source 3 which emits light from the back of a liquid crystal display 2, a line sensor 6 whose focal point F is set at a liquid crystal section 12 or bonded surfaces 13a, 14a of polarizing plates 13,14 in the liquid crystal display 2, and an arithmetically operating section 7a which detects the foreign substance 15 contained in the liquid crystal display 2 and locates the depth position and plan positions p<SB>1</SB>-p<SB>3</SB>by using information (measurement waveform of intensity) S<SB>1</SB>-S<SB>3</SB>relating to the intensity of the light being measured by the line sensor 6.
