Emergency escape system

An emergency escape system includes an escape apparatus and a hollow door. A majority of the escape apparatus is storable within an internal volume of the door. A part of the door is removable in order to access the escape apparatus. The escape apparatus includes a cord and a release mechanism. The release mechanism is configured to provide a controlled lowering of a person being lowered on the cord.
